Grindr gives you a short row of photos, so every one has to carry weight. Put a clear photo of your face first, because that is what shows in the grid. Follow it with a body photo you are comfortable with, something you do, a travel or social frame where you are easy to find, and one that shows your personality. Grindr's help center lists up to five profile photos, and its Community Guidelines require that public profile images show you.
Below is a slot-by-slot plan, the rules worth knowing before you upload, a few privacy habits, and how to check your photos before you post.
What Grindr says about profile photos
Two official pages matter. Grindr's help article on profile photos lists up to five photos on a profile, and says each photo must be smaller than 1 MB or 1028 by 1028 pixels. The help page is a few years old, so if your editor shows a different number, go with the editor.
The Grindr Community Guidelines set the content rules. As of 2026-10-29, public profile images must be of you, and they cannot be pornographic, violent or illegal. Profiles may include underwear photos, non-pornographic sexual poses and some non-graphic butt photos. Sexually explicit nudity, such as exposed genitals, is not allowed on a profile. Nipples are treated differently by gender: the guidelines say women's nipples count as prohibited nudity because of app store policies, while men and nonbinary people may show theirs. Read the current text before you upload, because the rules change.
The five slots, one by one
Slot 1: your face
The grid shows small tiles, so this photo has to survive being tiny. One person, you, with your face large in the frame and your eyes visible. Daylight, a plain background, and a relaxed look or a small smile all help. Skip sunglasses, hats pulled low, heavy filters, a cropped-out ex and any group photo. Grindr is the one app where the first photo is also the whole first impression, so spend the most effort here.
Slot 2: a body photo you are comfortable with
Some people want to see your build before they message. Whether you include one is your call. A full-length shot in clothes that fit, in a place with some depth, works well. A shirtless photo is fine if it sits behind your face photo and the light is good. Whatever you pick, stay inside the guidelines above and shoot it in daylight or a well-lit room.
Slot 3: you, doing something
A hike, a kitchen, a climbing wall, a game night. This is the photo that gives someone an easy first message. Keep your face big enough that a stranger knows it is the same person as slot 1.
Slot 4: a trip or a night out
A different place, light and outfit from the first three. If friends are in the shot, you should be in the foreground and easy to pick out. A tiny figure at a viewpoint does not count.
Slot 5: the personality photo
A real laugh, a pet, a costume, your favorite corner of your apartment. It does not have to be flattering. It has to look like you on a day you were not trying.
Keep it recent and keep it you
Use photos from the last two years or so, and from after any big change in your hair, beard or weight. Retouching that changes how your face looks makes the first meeting harder than it needs to be. Fix exposure and crop, then stop. Grindr requires public profile images to show you, so any AI edit has to leave you recognizable. Our piece on whether AI photos are allowed on dating apps covers the details.
Privacy habits that take five minutes
- Strip location data. Most phones can turn off location tagging for the camera. Do it before you shoot, or export a copy without metadata.
- Check the background. House numbers, street signs, a car plate, a work badge and your front door can identify you. Crop or blur them.
- Think about reuse. A photo you use on Grindr, LinkedIn and Instagram can be found with a reverse image search. Use a different photo for the apps where you want some separation.
- Keep your own copies. Save the unedited originals somewhere that is not the app.
Common Grindr photo mistakes
- A cropped or blurry first photo with no clear view of your face.
- A group photo as the lead.
- Dark, grainy or flash-lit photos.
- The same shirtless mirror pose in every slot.
- A photo that shows your home, workplace or license plate.
- Old photos that do not look like you now.
Check your set
Put your five photos next to each other. Does slot 1 read as a face in the grid? Does each slot show something the others do not? If a friend cannot tell what you do for fun from slots 3 to 5, swap one.
For a second opinion, upload your top candidates to our free photo analyzer. It is an automated read, so use it next to a friend's reaction. For the general method of building and shooting a set, see dating profile pictures and the guide on dating photo mistakes. Our Hinge photos page covers how the same set changes on an app that gives you six slots.
Questions
How many photos can you have on Grindr?
Grindr's help center lists up to five profile photos and says each photo must be smaller than 1 MB or 1028 by 1028 pixels. The page is a few years old, so if your editor shows a different number, trust the editor.
What should my first Grindr photo be?
A clear photo of your face, alone, in daylight or good light, with your eyes visible. The grid shows small tiles, so the photo has to be readable when it is small.
Does Grindr require my face in my profile photo?
Grindr's Community Guidelines say public profile images must be of you or created by you, and creative content that does not show your face is allowed. A clear face photo in slot 1 still helps people recognize you and is our recommendation.
What does Grindr allow in profile photos?
The Community Guidelines allow underwear photos, non-pornographic sexual poses and some non-graphic butt photos on a profile. They do not allow sexually explicit nudity such as exposed genitals. Read the current guidelines before you upload, because they change.
How do I keep my Grindr photos private?
Turn off location tagging on your camera, crop or blur house numbers, street signs and plates, and avoid using the same lead photo on every app, since a reverse image search can match it.
